Transportation accounts for one quarter of global fuel related greenhouse gas emissions, half of which are from private cars, including passenger cars and trucks. It is known that cycling can reduce emissions, but bicycles only account for a small part of transportation in most countries. The historical pattern of global bicycle production, trading volume, inventory and usage has not been well characterized, so it is impossible to comprehensively investigate the role of bicycles in sustainable road transport.
